Integrity Controls & Instrumentation (ICI) was founded in Baton Rouge, Louisiana by Bret and Courtney Moore. Through their combination of skills–Bret’s global functional safety experience and Courtney’s background in business–ICI offers industry-leading tools and services to support companies throughout the stages of the safety lifecycle.

We continually strive to build a company that promotes functional safety to save lives and property across a spectrum of industries including hydrocarbon refining, petrochemical and chemical process facilities.

Automated PLC Logic Proof Testing

The benefits of automated testing are stated above.  While not necessary per the standards, it is the most efficient, cost effective, and accurate method of testing a logic system.  The Integrity VTS (See is capable of generating test procedure, compiling and executing automated test procedures and exporting to other software platforms for automated testing.

Automated PLC Logic Proof Testing

Proof Test Procedures, Facilitation / Turnaround Support

Proof testing is a necessary component in the Safety Lifecycle.  Periodic tests are conducted on the SIS to ensure that it is can react to a hazardous demand.  Proof Test must be written to test all elements of the SIS including the Sensors, Logic Solver and Final Elements.  Proof Testing is conducted on intervals that correlate with the SIL Verification and when changes are made to the system during mid-intervals.

Functional Safety Auditing

An FS Audit provides a systematic and independent examination of the particular safety lifecycle phase activities under review. It determines whether the “procedures” specific to the functional safety requirements comply with the planned arrangements, are implemented effectively, and are suitable to achieve the specified objectives.  Industry good practice is encapsulated in the IEC 61511 standard [1]. Its clause 5.2.6.2.1 notes: “The purpose of the audit is to review information documents and records to determine whether the functional safety management system (FSMS) is in place, up to date, and being followed. Where gaps are identified, recommendations for improvements are made.”

Safety Requirements Specifications

The SRS is a summary of key decisions that must be made prior to the conceptual design.  The purpose of the SRS is to define the envelope of the Safety Instrumented System (SIS) design as defined by IEC 61511. This document should be viewed as a basis of design. It is a crucial review step that will minimize downstream detail design changes that could impact cost and/or schedule.

Report that reflects the assumptions made with regards to potential hazards likelihood, consequence and risk tolerance criteria in conjunction with the target Safety Integrity Level (SIL) assigned to each independent SIF.  ICI is capable of using several methods of determining SIL however, the preferred method and the industry trend is in the direction of LOPA (Layers of Protection Analysis).  ICI is capable of using a variety of tools and methods, however Integrity SIS and ExSILentia are our preferred toolsets.

A quantitative verification of each SIF Architecture to ensure it meets the target Risk Reduction determined in the SRS. ICI is capable of using a variety of software tools, however Integrity SIS, ExSILentia, and SIL Solver are our preferred toolsets.

Bridge Documents are the key documents that bridge information from the Safety Requirements Specification to the control engineer. These documents detail every function of the Logic Solver control program.

I/E Detail Design

I/E Detail Design is the final engineering stage. The intent of Detail Design is to specify all engineered equipment, bulk quantities, instrument and electrical wiring details, etc. to the extent that a contractor can accurately schedule and price the entire construction effort.

ICI will work with the selected I/E Engineering service providers to ensure this phase of the engineering process meets the intent of the Functional Safety Design.

Custom Functional Safety Database Development

Many companies have their functional safety documents (SIS Instrument Index, LOPA Worksheets, Independent Layers of Protection, SIF Datasheets, Safety Requirement Specifications, Proof Test Procedures, etc.) in many different formats and locations. Integrity is working with several customers to ensure their existing system more functional and auditable. Integrity will work with you to find the best solution to:

  • Rationalize/Streamline the applicable Functional Safety Documents
  • Create a Database of relevant Functional Safety Documents with hyperlinks for fast retrieval of related documents.
  • Create an automated method of moving data from excel, word and other documents to a relational database capable of maintaining data integrity throughout the database.
  • Custom reporting for Intercompany Auditing, Periodic Proof Testing, Independent Layers of Protection, Safety Requirements Specifications, etc.

Integrity Virtual Test Suite (VTS)

Integrity VTS is an I/O Simulator used for Tristation 1131 Version 4.x Systems. Integrity VTS connects to the Tristation Emulator via a DDE Connection and has the following capabilities:

  • Manual Testing is capable of creating and storing up to 32K configurable manual test screens.
  • Manual Testing includes configurable Input Preset used for easy testing for startup and shutdown testing.
  • Color scheme can be changed to either (Green = True / Red = False) or (Green = False / Red = True).
  • One-Button Click for writing Automated Test Procedures. Automated Scripts can easily be converted to Proof Test Procedures that are guaranteed to work.
  • An unlimited number of Test Procedures can be saved and imported for later use. Up to 32K lines per procedure set.
  • Automated Test Procedures are easily exported to Triconex Safety Validator. This allows the procedures to be executed directly on the Triconex Main Processors.

Integrity Controls and Instrumentation uses VTS to test existing control program for compliance to existing documentation including:

This process ensures that all associated documentation and operation of the existing SIS installation are consistent. The result is a redlined update of the entire document set for end user review.

Integrity Auditor is an audit utility ICI uses for audits pertaining to IEC 61511 (Functional Safety), API (Prescriptive Standard), NFPA (Prescriptive Standard) as well as any Customer Specific guidelines associated with SIS Installations.

Configurable Audit Questionnaire:
The audit questionnaire is pre-loaded with standard questions for compliance to IEC 61511.  However, the user has the ability to remove and add as many questions has they feel necessary using the Integrity Audit Configuration Menu.

Integrity SIS is a Functional Safety Engineering (FSE) tool specifically designed for the Analysis and Design phases of IEC 61511. Most FSE tools in the marketplace are designed to address specific deliverables in the lifecycle.
